Take a Pain Check (TAPC) Foundation and the Canadian Arthritis Patient Alliance are both community-led organizations that support people with arthritis as they navigate life and healthcare. In 2022, we launched a project called “Make Rheum for Youth” in order to better understand the needs of youth and young adults with arthritis. This project is important as youth perspectives are underrepresented in policy and research in Canada, and they experience unique challenges as they navigate life and the transition from pediatric to adult health care.

We are now starting the next phase of the project and creating a Youth Committee of ten youth and young adults with arthritis. We will provide Youth Committee members with support and learning opportunities and the opportunity to develop leadership and other skills. The expectation is that Youth Committee members will develop educational resources based on the findings of the Make Rheum for Youth survey.

Description and expectations

As a member of the Youth Committee, you will be expected to undertake the following tasks and duties:

  • Attending three virtual meetings minimum (about 1-2 hours for each meeting) to share experiences and co-develop the resources with the team
  • Interacting with members of the Youth Committee in a positive way through mutual respect, trust, effective communication, cooperation, and understanding of different perspectives
  • Sharing views on the key elements of the terms of reference which will govern the activities of the Youth Committee
  • Actively identify learning and support needs by communicating with representatives of TAPC and CAPA
  • Actively contributing to discussions and seeking advice from community members using an on-line platform (we will be using a communication platform agreed to by the Committee and will provide support in learning how to use this application)
  • Provide constructive feedback on the draft resources
  • Providing constructive feedback about your experiences with the Youth Committee, e.g., completing evaluation surveys
  • Dedicating time to participate in the program between January and April 2024

An honorarium of $150 will be provided to Youth Committee members to recognize their time and expertise. You will also be recognized on the websites and social media channels of both organizations, if you’re comfortable with this.
