Join us on September 16, 2025 at 12:00 pm ET to explore how patients can engage in both pre-clinical research and clinical practice guidelines.

The session will feature patient partner Marie-Maxime Bergeron and Drs. Manoj Lalu and Glen Hazlewood. A short biography of each speaker is below:

  • Manoj Lalu is an Anesthesiologist and Scientist at The Ottawa Hospital. He currently holds the University of Ottawa Clinical Research Chair in Innovative Translational Research. His research is largely preclinical and translational, focusing on methods that could improve early clinical trials of novel therapies. One method that may improve this pathway is patient engagement in the research. His team regularly partners with patients to help plan and conduct both clinical and preclinical studies.
  • Marie-Maxime Bergeron is a registered dietitian and her lived experience as a septic shock survivor was a catalyst to seek ways that she could contribute to improving healthcare. She became involved in advocacy, steering committees, working groups and knowledge transfer. Marie-Maxime’s engagement experience drove her to pursue a master’s degree in healthcare education. After her discharge from intensive care, she felt it was important to share her story to raise public awareness about sepsis as well as to deepen her understanding of what had happened to her.
  • Glen Hazlewood is a practicing rheumatologist and clinician scientist. Currently an Associate Professor within the Department of Medicine, he completed his rheumatology training in 2010 at the University of Calgary and his PhD in clinical epidemiology through the University of Toronto in 2016. He has engaged patient partners in rheumatology clinical practice guidelines for over 10 years.
