Osteoarthritis (OA) affects millions of Canadians, leading to joint pain and reduced mobility. GLA:D™ Canada offers an evidence-based program to help individuals manage hip and knee OA symptoms.
Understanding GLA:D™ Canada
GLA:D™, which stands for “Good Life with osteoArthritis: Denmark,” originated in Denmark, and has been adapted for Canadians. The program combines education and exercises which activate and train all the muscles in the joint to improve stability and function. It is provided by rehabilitation professionals (e.g. physiotherapists) who have been certified by attending a course that provides the latest evidence on the management of OA and teaches the skills necessary to help people with OA. These professionals are able to offer the program in their clinics with programs now available across Canada.
Program Structure
The GLA:D™ Canada program spans six to eight weeks and includes:
- Education Sessions: Two sessions of one hour which covers OA basics, symptom management, and self-care strategies; and
- Exercise Sessions: Twelve group sessions of one hour focusing on exercises to enhance muscle control and joint stability
- Outcome tracking: Collection of patient outcome data which is used to monitor program quality across the country.
Program Benefits
Participants have reported:
- Pain Reduction: A 15-29% decrease in pain levels.
- Improved Function: Increased ability to do their daily activities including recreational activities
- Quality of Life: Significant improvements in overall well-being.
Virtual Participation
Some of the clinics offer virtual sessions, allowing participants to engage from home.
